Pasco High 9th Grade Orientation

8th grade families, you might be excited, or you might be in denial, but the fact remains, your babies are almost high schoolers!

Pasco High is having Pirate Curriculum Night on Thursday, February 16th, starting at 6PM in their gym. 8th grade students and parents are encouraged to attend to learn about:

  • online courses
  • AICE courses
  • AP courses
  • Dual Enrollment
  • elective offerings
  • other important info regarding classes and graduation requirements

Please contact the high school with any additional questions.

Dress for Success Days

Parents and students, please be reminded that the expectation for Dress for Success day is to wear professional attire ALL day, not just for the time surrounding your AVID class. Students who change will not earn credit and risk their spot in the program if they continue to break the expectation. The point behind this day is to learn to be comfortable in this type of clothing to be better prepared for the future. The more a student learns to be at ease and be him/herself while dressed professionally, the more his/her skills and character can shine.

Reminder – Holiday Night

This is just a reminder of the AVID Family Holiday Night this coming Wednesday (12-21) night from 5:30-7:00 in the PASCO HIGH Quad/Commons area! We will join PHS AVID for a big family gathering with hot cocoa, snacks, card making, games, Christmas photos, and a gingerbread house competition. Hope to see you there!

Volunteer Opportunity

Pasco Middle NJHS is doing a food drive for The Thomas Promise Foundation, and they need our help. The Thomas Promise Foundation is a local foundation that delivers backpacks to our community. An AVID student can get 2 volunteer hours for each full grocery bag of non-perishable items (see below) he/she donates.  We will be collecting supplies all the way until winter break. Students from each grade level who donate the most bags will receive Olga’s as a reward.

It takes a lot of Trail Supplies to pack 1,000 backpacks, and your donation can make a difference.  Operation Backpack needs kid-friendly supplies, including:

  • canned goods (ravioli, tuna fish, Vienna sausages, etc.)
  • juice boxes
  • individually wrapped cookies and crackers
  • cereal and granola bars
  • packaged snacks
  • dried fruit
  • school supplies (pencils, crayons, paper, etc.)
  • miniature toiletries (hotel sized)
  • bottled water

Volunteer Opportunity

Our very own PMS ELA teacher, Kristy Kassabaum, is taking over ownership of Dade City’s local bookstore, The Book Shack. You can imagine the work that will go into this transition, especially since this local gem will be moving locations. Mrs. Kassabaum has asked AVID for volunteers on October 1st and/or 2nd from 8AM-2PM. So, if you’re interested in packing books, alphabetizing books, moving books, cleaning, etc. please email Mrs. Kassabaum at and let her know which day(s) and what hours you are available. She will get back with you ASAP.

8th Grade AVID Field Trip

Paperwork is going home today for our upcoming 8th grade AVID field trip to Raymond James Stadium on October 18th! This is an incredible opportunity for our students to learn about careers associated with running a professional sports franchise. Please read and fill out all forms in their entirety.

I WANT ALL 8TH AVID STUDENTS TO ATTEND! If the $20 cost is an issue, there are 3 possible means of assistance:

  1. Bring $1 and completed forms, indicating on the form that you will pay $1 a week until the $20 is paid in full.
  2. Bring $10 and completed forms, indicating you would like a $10 scholarship to help offset the cost.
  3. Bring $1 and completed forms, indicating you would like a $10 scholarship AND will pay $1 a week until the $10 is paid in full.

Each student will receive a complimentary ticket to one of 4 Bucs Home Games. Please note that the Carolina Panther game (Jan 1st) was accidentally left off as an option. If you would like this game as your complimentary ticket, please write that on the order form!

You may purchase additional tickets for family members to one of the 4 games for a reduced rate of $40 each (to be indicated on order form). If you are unable to purchase additional tickets but would still like your student to attend a game with his/her complimentary ticket, Mrs. Mickler will attend the Panthers game and is willing to supervise the PMS AVID group during the game (transportation to and from the game must be arranged on your own). Indicate this on the order form as well.
